Quakerism

“FMC is one of the best camps I’ve ever been to. It inspires me both musically and spiritually.”
-Camper reflection

At Friends Music Camp, Quaker principles shape the way we live, learn, and make music together.

Each day begins and ends with Collection—twenty minutes set aside for the whole community to gather in silence. For those from Quaker or other religious backgrounds, this is a time of silent worship. For campers and staff from non-religious backgrounds, it’s a chance for meditation, reflection, or simply thinking through the day. This quiet, shared space draws our community together, and many campers and staff describe it as one of the most meaningful parts of their FMC experience.

We also embrace inclusivity and social responsibility. FMC is a welcoming, safe space for everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or economic circumstances. All campers take a class called Life Challenge, where they explore ethics, social justice, and how to be thoughtful, caring members of their community.

Cooperative music making is central to our philosophy. We encourage campers to improve their musical skills every day, without fostering competition. Guided by the Quaker belief that every person brings value to the community, FMC welcomes musicians of all levels and instruments. Each summer brings a unique mix of instruments, voices, and experience, and our staff are experts at tailoring teaching and repertoire to bring out the best in every camper.

Camper leadership is another cornerstone of camp life. Campers actively shape our community by joining and leading committees that organize social activities, celebrate birthdays, write the camp newsletter, and more. Returning campers may join the Camper Advisory Committee, which meets to discuss issues and concerns and reports back to the community at weekly business meetings run by clerks chosen by campers. Weekly camper-led sharing groups allow small groups to discuss topics of their choosing, giving everyone a chance to connect with new friends. Many evening activities, from Capture the Flag to Stunt Night, Original Works Sharing, and the Camper-Planned Dance, are led by campers themselves.

Through these practices, FMC fosters a caring, collaborative environment where kindness, empathy, and respect are part of everyday life—helping every camper grow not just as a musician, but as a person.
